Coping with Grief and Loss

When it comes to grief and loss, how we respond to that loss can vary. Here are some ways that may be helpful for you or a loved one to use when grieving.

Navigating and interacting with a person that is grieving can be difficult and sometimes awkward for people because you may not know what to say or what to do! Sometimes is less is more so LISTENING or just BEING PRESENT with the individual can do more than you know.

Ways to Show Support to Someone Grieving

  1. Reach out

  2. Lend a listening ear

  3. Offer empathy

  4. Provide help where possible (meals, cleaning, etc.)

  5. Avoid judgment

  6. Just be there (even if it's only to sit in silence)

  7. Share positive/light-hearted memories

Finding things to say to someone who is grieving can be difficult. Unless you know the true nature of a person's relationship with the lost one, try to refrain from saying things such as "sorry for your loss," "they are in a better place," or "everything happens for a reason." Instead, here are some phrases that may be more empathetic and comforting.

Things to Say to Someone Who is Grieving

  1. "Is there anything I can do for you?"

  2. "I'm here to help support you."

  3. "You are in my thoughts/prayers."

  4. "Sending you many condolences for your loss."

  5. "May you find peace and joy with the memories you have with *insert name*
