Questions to Ask When Choosing a Therapist

  • There are many different approaches and theories that providers use to help individuals become better versions of themselves. Some providers may choose a more collaborative and behavioral based approach, whereas others may use play, music, or art to guide therapy sessions. See our education page for more information about types of therapy.

  • Sessions generally range from 30-60 minutes. Some providers may have a preference for session structure. Be sure to ask these questions during your initial consult with a potential provider.

  • Sessions may be held on a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or any other time frame as agreed upon between you and your provider.

  • Intakes are often used to gather background information about new clients and can run a bit longer than a general therapy session would. Check with your provider about the cost for each of these services.

  • Some providers may often an income-based sliding scale for session fees. To see if this is provided and if you qualify, you can ask this question during your initial conversation.

  • If you would like to use your behavioral health benefits provided by your insurance company, check with the provider beforehand to determine if insurance is accepted. You should also inquire about if the provider is in/out of network with your carrier. More information about this can be found on the education tab.

  • It is important to feel understood by your therapist. If it is important to you that you are seen by a provider who understands struggles specific to your identities (race, gender, sexuality, etc.), it is okay to inquire about the therapist’s professional experience working with specific populations.

  • The field of psychology offers many avenues for therapists to gain a variety of experiences. Many providers choose to narrow their focus to a few areas of expertise.
